Enjoying one of my favorite lunch and breakfast sp Enjoying one of my favorite lunch and breakfast spots in town, the infamous @magnoliacafeaustin . They’re serving up @512brewing Kolsch on draft! This place is connected to the brewery in so many ways and it’s one of the institutions of Austin diner culture! #draftisking #oldschoolaustin #sorrywereopen thx Mag!!
The Dig Pub It was the first week I had beer for s The Dig Pub
It was the first week I had beer for sale and I was planning to sell to a handful of special bars widely spread around the area like planting seeds. Up in Cedar Park I found a beer bar that had just gotten started. Todd and Christy Wink had opened a new beer only bar and when I let them know I was starting a new brewery, they were as excited about me as I was about them. They immediately came down to see the brewery and to seal the deal for whatever beer I could sell them.

That seems to be one thing in common with all the most successful bars around Austin – when they hear local beer they say “bring it” without hesitation. They didn’t ask my price or even much about the beer. They knew something hyper local and new would sell well enough, as people had to try it. If it was well received, they’d keep it. We’ve been on draft here ever since.

Beer bars like this, and the ones I’ll continue to showcase, have a few things in common. People enjoy the environment. People enjoy the staff. The bar pays close attention to quality of the beer and the quality of the process. They don’t cave under pressure to sell just anything people ask for.

The Dig Pub, opened in 2007, is a cornerstone of the craft beer scene in Austin. In 2020 The Winks sold their baby to one of their long time bar tenders, Erik Mayfield, who’s just as passionate as they were. And now his daughter, Sage, is behind the bar pouring beers and carrying the torch!

Thanks, @the_digpub , for 15 years of support and thanks for anchoring Austin Craft beer in the NW region of Austin!
Scholz Garten With (512) sales as far back as 2010 Scholz Garten
With (512) sales as far back as 2010, another Austin beer bar legend is Scholz Garten ( @scholzgarten ) Founded in 1866, and the oldest beer garden in America, you can feel the history as you walk through the door. They don’t make bars like this anymore. Just a few blocks from UT campus, this place is ideal for pre gaming, with a really special garden and stage that I’m sure has hosted legends over the years.

When I first walked in, I figured my beers would never be worthy of one of the two dozen or so draft lines here. This was more a place for my friends @liveoakbrewing or @shinerbeer than for my new Americanized English and Belgian ales. As the IPA craze took off, it was one of my first employees who landed us a spot in this highly coveted beer bar and, quickly, (512) IPA became a staple. It’s their commitment to supporting local draft options that makes it even more of a special place.

I get the excitement and energy of visiting brewery tap rooms, where the beer is made, and the equipment looms in the background. I encourage you to visit the beer bars of Austin where decades (in this case well over a century) of beer drinking history has been made. Just imagining people coming together so long ago to decompress or celebrate or console over the beer of the time makes for a special experience.

Thanks, Scholz, for the years and years of support!
@crownandanchoratx When I was just starting out e @crownandanchoratx
When I was just starting out enjoying Austin, around ‘93 or so, of course the first place I looked for was a great beer bar. Among the best in the world, the Crown was on my way to class!, so afterwards, meeting up for a pint became a thing. A good thing. And it’s still as great as ever!

15 years later when I started @512brewing they were first on my list to approach and luckily we’ve been on ever since. Can’t thank them enough for all the support they give to this area and to local brewers!

Drop in and catch up with my buddy Derven, who likely has poured more (512) pints over the years than anyone else! If you’re visiting Austin, or somehow haven’t crossed paths with the Crown, it’s a must visit! Enjoy!
